In recent years, as global temperatures have risen, there has been a significant uptick in natural disasters. In fact, according to new research from Outforia, since 2000 alone there have been 12,490,54 deaths and over 41 billion people affected worldwide from natural disasters.

In the UK alone there has been 3,739 deaths since 2000 from natural disasters - 3,626 of those from extreme temperatures.

When we look closely at the UK we can see that:

  • There have been a total of 3,739 deaths since 2000 in the UK from natural disasters. The majority of these are from extreme temperatures, with 3,626 deaths

  • When comparing deaths from extreme temperatures in the UK to around the world, the UK comes in 8th place, beating the likes of Portugal and the Netherlands for the most dangerous when it comes to extreme temperatures.

  • When it comes to overall impact, 434,413 people have been affected in the UK from flooding and a huge 61,088 people have been affected by storms

  • More unusually, 4,501 people have been ‘affected’ in the UK from earthquakes.

In other areas of the data, we can see that:

  • The biggest natural disaster ‘killer’ of all time is drought, with 117,314,424 deaths, followed by flooding, with 69,908,21 deaths.

  • When we look at more recently, since 2000 the biggest killer is earthquakes, with 721,311 deaths globally, followed by storms with 201,485 deaths

  • The country which has seen the most devastation is Haiti, with a tragic 230,116 deaths since 2000. This is followed by Indonesia, Myanmar, then China.

  • The places which have seen the most people ‘affected’ (defined as “People requiring immediate assistance during a period of emergency, i.e. requiring basic survival needs such as food, water, shelter, sanitation and immediate medical assistance.”)  natural disasters are China, India and the Philippines. China has seen over 1,743,478,501 people affected by natural disasters.
