New figures show a £32 billion gap in tax owed

New figures released today show that £32 bllion tax went uncollected last year underlining the need for more resources so HMRC can collect the cash that could be spent on public services.

Tom Peters, Head of Advocacy at Tax Justice UK, said: “The tax gap has been vast for years now, with little sign the government is doing enough to tackle it.

“We know that investment in HMRC pays dividends in terms of collecting tax that’s due. This government must give HMRC the resources it needs to find these missing billions”

Research by Arun Advani of Warwick University found that one in three taxpayers who complete a tax return underpay their taxes and that a more proactive approach by HMRC  to auditing tax returns could help reduce the tax gap.
