press-release-of-day

27th April 2023

Bethan from TikTok press office here. I wanted to share the news that WHAM!, the legendary 80s duo formed by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, is now officially on TikTok!

Best known for their string of global pop hits including 'Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go', 'Club Tropicana' and 'Last Christmas', WHAM! are one of the defining pop sounds of the 80s, and now Andrew Ridgeley and George Michael Entertainment will be bringing WHAM!'s music to a new generation on TikTok. The official channel is now live at @WHAM! and their first video has over 85.3k views so far!

Speaking on WHAM!'s onboarding, Andrew Ridgeley said: “I am thrilled that TikTok is giving WHAM! such wholehearted support. It’s truly heart-warming to know that the TikTok generation embrace WHAM!’s vibrancy and its appeal to the young and youthful endures."

WHAM! are the latest iconic band from the 80s to join TikTok and connect with fans new and old. In recent years, fellow legends such as The Rolling Stones, Rick Astley, Elton John, ABBA & Queen have found new audiences to engage with their fans on TikTok.

Do let me know if this story will be of interest more broadly and if you'd like to speak with a spokesperson about artists from the 80s joining TikTok to connect with fans.

Andrew Ridgeley, one-half of the iconic duo, has already amassed a fan base on the platform with over 28 million views on #andrewridgeley content. Fans have used the hashtag to reminisce about the hairstyles, the shorts, and the catchy choruses from their heyday. #80smusic is a much-loved throwback on TikTok, with over 4.8 billion views. Creators have used the hashtag to either relive their best 80s memories or show why they were born in the wrong era. The iconic band has inspired a whole generation of artists, most recently singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi whose single "Forget Me" was a shot-by-shot remake of Club Tropicana.

The TikTok community is all about connecting with music and artists, no matter the genre or decade. We've seen the resurgence of Kate Bush's 'Running Up That Hill' after featuring on Stranger Things, and found new ways to celebrate Carly Simon's classic 'You're So Vain'. This growing trend continues to show how legendary and iconic artists from across the decades are coming together to engage with old and new fans who love them equally too.

WHAM! are the latest iconic band from the 80s to join TikTok and connect with fans new and old. In recent years, fellow legends such as The Rolling Stones, Rick Astley, Elton John, ABBA & Queen have found new audiences to engage with their fans on TikTok. The Rolling Stones' onboarding video has racked up over 12.1 million views to date, and Elton John continues to experience success on the platform, jumping on trends including the popular hashtag #piano to engage with fans. Artists from all decades have found a home on TikTok, using the platform to reach the global community.

The TikTok community can finally welcome WHAM! and get creating with their full catalogue now.
