Foodie Map Reveals World’s Most Iconic National Dishes

  • 1 in 5 of the most popular dishes were from Asia
  • Only 2 of the 10 most popular dishes were from Europe
  • African cuisine accounted for fewer than 1% of most popular dishes

A study by recipe box company Gousto has revealed the most iconic national dishes from around the globe.

Over 150 million Instagram posts were analysed, combined with Google search data to reveal the most iconic national dishes across every country in every continent.

The Continent With The Most ICONIC Dishes

North America dominates the list with more than 95 million posts mentioning their most iconic dishes, compared with the content Oceania with just 850,000 posts.   

North America Total: 95,099,104: 72 dishes

 

  1. Asia Total: 34,064,995: 59 dishes
  2. Europe Total: 14,393,019: 56 dishes
  3. South America Total: 4,579,604: 12 dishes
  4. Africa Total 2,212,991: 54 dishes
  5. Oceania Total: 850,389: 11 dishes

Asian dishes are snapped & tagged more than twice as often as European dishes, making up 22% of the total list.

  1. Japan - Sushi
  2. Vietnam - Pho
  3. North Korea - Kimchi
  4. Japan - Udon
  5. Japan - Soba
  6. Thailand - Pad Thai
  7. Indonesia - Nasi Goreng
  8. United Arab Emirates - Shawarma
  9. Malaysia - Nasi Lemak
  10. Indonesia - Soto

As one of the world’s largest and most diverse continents, African cuisine surprisingly only makes up less than 1% of the list of iconic dishes.

  1. Sao Tome and Principe - Palm Oil Stew
  2. Burundi - Boko-Boko
  3. Côte d'Ivoire - Kedjenou
  4. Burkina Faso - Riz Gras
  5. Somalia - Canjeero
  6. Mauritius - Octopus Curry
  7. Madagascar - Romazava
  8. Liberia - Dumboy
  9. Botswana - Seswaa
  10. Angola - Muamba de Galinha

Based on the findings of the study, a spokesperson from Gousto said:
