Almost One In Three Adults No Longer Receive A Birthday Cake, But Three Quarters Who Do Admit They Still Make A Wish

·         31% of UK adults no longer receive a birthday cake every year, with 32 years old the average end this comes to end for them

·         More than half (58%) of those admit it bothers them and makes their birthday feel less special

·         76% of adults who still receive a cake each year admit they still make a wish, with winning the lottery, health & happiness and hope for children to do well the most popular wishes made

·         In the past year, almost all birthday wishes have been for COVID-19 to end and for life to get back to normal

The team at www.bakerdays.com surveyed almost 2,400 UK-based adults to determine just how many adults celebrate their birthdays, have birthday cakes and make a wish.

Initially it was found that almost one in three adults no longer celebrates their birthday with a birthday cake (31%), with 32 years old found to be the average age that birthdays cake stop becoming an annual tradition. Of those who stopped receiving a birthday cake every year on their birthday, almost all (92%) still received cakes on their milestone birthdays, such as 40 and 50 years old.

Asked how they feel about not receiving a cake, while 42% said it didn’t bother them either way, 58% admitted that it did bother them and made their birthday celebrations feel less special.

The top reasons that a cake was no longer purchased for their birthday were revealed to be ‘it wasn’t being eaten’ (40%) and ‘it was forgotten one year and then stopped being purchased’ (25%).

76% of those who are fortunate enough to still receive a birthday cake each year admitted that they still make a wish when blowing out their candles. The top themes of their wishes were found to be:

·         To win the lottery - 23%

·         For health and happiness - 22%

·         For children within the family to do well - 18%

·         To get a promotion/pay rise at work – 12%

·         For a new car - 7%

Of those who have had a birthday during one of the three lockdowns, 89% admitted that they have wished for the ongoing pandemic to come to an end so that life can go back to normal.

Finally, two thirds of respondents (67%) admitted that they prefer to celebrate someone else’s birthday instead of their own, with spouses (35%), best friends (29%) and pets (20%) being the favourites to spoil and celebrate with.

Andrea Guzyova, Founder of Treats and Bites (t/a www.bakerdays.com) said:

“It’s not truly a celebration without cake, and we believe everyone should be allowed to blow out candles on their day of birth! There is something very magical about birthdays and, let’s face it, who doesn’t love cake? Hopefully what we’ve uncovered here will get people thinking about how they celebrate the birthdays of those closest to them and they’ll ensure that everyone has a candle or two to blow out, regardless of the size of the cake, from cupcake right through to one that’s large enough to feed an army.”
