From August 2021 the famous Rocky Mountaineer will be travelling a new and glorious rail route through the American Rockies between Denver in Colorado and Moab in Utah. Famous for its rail journeys that sweep across Canada’s best landscapes, this is the rail operator’s first stand-alone route in the American Southwest, travelling along the Colorado River, passing through steep rock canyons and breathtaking desert scenes and stopping overnight for a stay in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

Mirroring the successful formula of its existing Canadian routes,  the U.S. option will offer passengers a similar onboard experience, including thoughtfully-prepared regional cuisine, entertaining and educational storytelling and – of course -  their custom-designed glass-dome coaches, from which to view the mountain landscapes and rock formations of the American Southwest.  The pace of travel on board is known as ‘Kodak speed’, reflecting the need to take lots of time over the multiple photo opportunities that will inevitably offer themselves up along the way.

Along the first day route from Denver to Glenwood Springs, the train will travel through canyons including Red Canyon, Byers and Glenwood. On the second day on the rails, glasses will be raised as the train crosses the border from Colorado into Utah, where delights ahead will include the Book Cliff Mountains and La Sal Mountains, which are only accessible by rail or river.

This new Rocky Mountaineer journey will end in Moab,  from where American Sky have extended the itinerary into a six day package that includes the majestic national parks of Utah, bringing opportunities to explore the superb natural sandstone arches of Arches National Park, the mysterious rock formations called Hoodoos of Bryce Canyon National Park and the soaring mounts and lush valleys of Zion National Park.  The tour ends in Las Vegas, with opportunities to fly directly home or extend the stay to include a day or two in the City of Lights.

American Sky’s six night Rocky Mountaineer Rockies to the Red Rocks Explorer starts from £3555 per person, including international flights (into Denver and out of Las Vegas), six nights hotel accommodation, two day rail journey on board the Rocky Mountaineer, guided coach tours of National Parks, 5 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners.
