Intrepid and Alice Morrison team up for special Morocco Women’s Expedition
Adventurer and writer Alice Morrison will lead a special edition of Intrepid’s best-selling Morocco Women’s Expedition this Autumn.
Morrison is the author of the recently-released book Walking with Nomads, which follows her and her guides on three expeditions walking from the Sahara to the Atlas Mountains – covering thousands of kilometres on foot.
Morrison was the first woman to walk the full length of the Draa River, a voyage of discovery where she found a lost city, investigated prehistoric monuments and saw for herself the effects that climate change is having on the nomadic people of the Draa Valley.
Alice will join a group of female travellers as they hike between remote villages in the Atlas Mountains, meet Moroccan women from all walks of life and gain an insight into their customs and traditions. Along the way, Alice will share amazing stories from her adventures in Morocco that earned her the nickname ‘Indiana Jones for girls’.
The group will travel from Marrakech to Imlil, a small village in the high Atlas Mountains, and enjoy tea with Alice on the terrace of her home. They’ll then explore Alice’s incredible backyard with two full days trekking through the deep cut valleys and rugged landscape of the Atlas Mountains. Travellers will pass through remote villages and meet locals, and stay overnight at Mt Toubkal Base Camp and Camp Netler.
Back in Marrakech, the group will join an embroidery workshop with Al Nour, a social impact women’s project preserving craft-making traditions. They will also stop in Asni to visit Education for All, a charity which builds and run girls’ boarding houses near secondary schools, so girls from rural families can continue their education and have a brighter future.
Intrepid's Morocco Women’s Expedition was relaunched this year to focus on helping women recover from the impact of the pandemic. It is one of a range of Womens Expeditions that focus on breaking down barriers, fostering discussion and creating experiences for women that are ordinarily off limits on regular mixed-gender departures.
