Simone Rocha and Hauser & Wirth are pleased to announce a jewellery collaboration inspired by the works of the French-American artist, Louise Bourgeois, who is recognized as one of the most important and influential artists of the twentieth century.
The new project comprises two styles of special edition earrings inspired by the late artist’s fabric hanging works. The earrings are 24 carat gold plated sterling silver and each style is available in a limited edition of 250 worldwide.
For over seven decades, Bourgeois’s creative process was fueled by an introspective reality, often rooted in cathartic re-visitations of early childhood trauma and frank examinations of female sexuality. Articulated by recurrent motifs (including body parts, houses and spiders), personal symbolism and psychological release, the conceptual and stylistic complexity of Bourgeois’s oeuvre – employing a variety of genres, media and materials – plays upon the powers of association, memory, fantasy, and fear.
Rocha has long been inspired by Bourgeois, since first seeing her work at the Irish Museum of Art whilst studying. Bourgeois’s exploration of self, family and femininity as well as fabric and use of color have been a continued source of inspiration. Rocha has built up a direct relationship with the Louise Bourgeois studio, and most recently included a series of Bourgeois’s fabric works used as prints in the Simone Rocha AW19 collection.
The new earrings are inspired by two specific artworks reimagined in gold outline: ‘SPIRAL WOMAN’, from 2003, which is a female half-body, in which the head of the figure is replaced with a snail-like organic form, suggestive of a spiral, and ‘UNTITLED’ (1995), a limp hanging figure of ambiguous gender.
The earrings will be available from Simone Rocha stores from 1st May, at Hauser & Wirth gallery shops in London, Somerset, New York (22nd St) and Los Angeles, and online at www.hauserwirth.com. The earrings will then be launching with Dover Street Market worldwide from 16th May.
