THE UNMAPPED CHRONICLES: BOOK ONE
by Abi Elphinstone
Published: 30th May 2019
Climate change, unlikely heroes and the power of self-belief come together in bestselling author Abi Elphinstone’s brand new adventure series The Unmapped Chronicles.
This year Abi Elphinstone was a World Book Day Author with her £1 book Everdark – prequel to Rumblestar and the first tale from the world of The Unmapped Chronicles – which reached number 9 in the bestseller chart. Her previous book, Sky Song, was Waterstones Book of the Month and was shortlisted for Sainsbury’s Children’s Book Award for Fiction and longlisted for the Blue Peter Book Award. Abi does numerous events in schools, appears at top literary festivals in the UK and abroad and has featured on Blue Peter and CITV.
Abi is an adventurer, a former teacher and a spokesperson for children’s literacy. As a member of Authors4Oceans, the environment was a key inspiration for Abi’s new series:
Abi Elphinstone says: ‘Nothing highlighted the severity of the environmental issues facing our planet today like the #YouthStrike4Climate movement this Spring and I want my new series, The Unmapped Chronicles, to amplify the voices of these children. From heat waves to intense storms, sea levels rising to biodiversity loss, the future of our world is in peril and I believe stories have the power to awaken, challenge and inspire hearts and minds to act.
Each book in The Unmapped Chronicles is set in one of the four secret lands known as the Unmapped Kingdoms, where all the wonders behind the weather – from the symphony of a sunrise to the stories of a snowstorm – are conjured for our world. But these kingdoms are in grave danger… Morg, an evil harpy, is wreaking havoc with her dark and terrible magic and the consequences for our planet, which is already on the brink of disaster as a result of global warming, are devastating: storms rage, animals and plants near extinction, oceans dry up and ice caps melt. Our only hope lies with various children from our world who find themselves transported to the Unmapped Kingdoms to stop Morg and her followers, the Midnights.
I am a writer first and foremost because the Scottish wilderness I grew up in made me one. Adventures building dens in the woods and searching for waterfalls up the glen provided inspiration years later for the wild settings of my stories. But that was before iPhones and iPads crept in. Screens swallow up childhoods now and kids need stories that teach them to look up and out at the beautiful but fragile world around them. Rumblestar is a story about clouds giants and Neverlate trees, unexpected friendships and learning to be brave – above all though, it is a story about wonder, about the mind-bending beauty of the natural world.’
Alongside the environment, Abi is also happy to discuss:
- Travelling the world to find her stories: from dog-sledding in the Arctic Circle to living with the Kazakh Eagle Hunters in Mongolia – and how she continues to travel with her 18-month-old baby
- Her inspiring success story: involving 96 rejection letters from literary agents and three unpublished manuscripts
- Diversity in literature: Abi has written characters who have dyslexia (Abi herself is dyslexic) and Down’s Syndrome (Abi’s sister-in-law has Down’s Syndrome)
- Galvanising children to read for pleasure: Abi is an ambassador for Beanstalk Charity and Grimm & Co who help improve literacy levels in young people from disadvantaged backgrounds
RUMBLESTAR – A SKY-SOARING ADVENTURE
'Adventures are unpredictable and often terribly badly behaved – a bit like pickled onions if you’ve ever tried to fork one on a plate – but they have a way of unlocking people and turning them upside down so that all the astonishing things fizzing around inside them start to tumble out…’
Eleven-year-old Casper Tock hates risks, is allergic to adventures and shudders at the thought of unpredictable events. So, it comes as a nasty shock to him when he accidentally stumbles into Rumblestar, an Unmapped Kingdom full of magical beasts. All Casper wants is to find a way home, but Rumblestar is in trouble. An evil harpy called Morg is sending her followers, the Midnights, into the kingdom to cause chaos and pave the way for her to steal the Unmapped magic for herself. But Casper cannot turn a blind eye because the future of his own world, he discovers, is bound up with that of the Unmapped Kingdoms. And so, together with Utterly Thankless, a girl who hates rules and is allergic to behaving, and her miniature dragon, Arlo, Casper embarks upon an adventure full of cloud giants, storm ogres and drizzle hags.
